What are lignans?

Lignans are compounds found in fiber-rich foods, that are blessed with important properties, such as
  • Anti-cancerous
  • Anti-bacterial
  • Anti-viral
  • Anti-fungal
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antioxidative
activity, which helps fight and prevent disease. Such properties protect and maintain our health

?What challenges are we facing

The processed foods we eat lack the nutritional values they used to have. The amount and quality of lignans have decreased, thus allowing damaging oxidative stress to emerge, as a result of the generation of free radicals.
Most of us do not regularly consume raw seeds, fruit, vegetables, nuts and legumes that could supply us with the plant lignans, which are required to benefit our health.

The average daily lignan consumption in the US is of approximately 1 mg. This is despite the fact that scientists estimate the daily amount of lignans, required for increasing enterolactone levels, to be at least 50-100 mg
((Enterolactone is a body metabolite that is produced from lignans. It possesses near-zero estrogenic activity, compared to those of estrogen, and therefore can aid in preventing hormone-dependent cancers).

Why do our bodies require lignans, which include antioxidants that inhibit free radicals?

  • Lignans possess the ability to remove health-damaging molecules that are generated during air pollution processes.
  • Lignans in tree extracts were shown to possess anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Lignans are powerful antioxidants. Oxidation can result in old-looking skin.
  • Lignans are powerful antioxidants that prevent generation of free radicals and inhibit oxidative stress, which results in cellular damage.
  • Lignans are even able to neutralize existing free radicals.

"The amount of antioxidants that you maintain in your body is directly related to how long you will live"

Dr. Richard Cutler, former Head of the Free Radicals Dept. in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Washington D.C.

?Why do free radicals cause illness

The destructive effects of free radicals.

Free radicals are atoms that have an unpaired electron. These atoms pull electrons from other, balanced, atoms, thus causing them to turn into free radicals as well. This results in damage to cell and DNA structure, and impairs function.

Over time, oxidative stress accumulates in the body ('rust'), and contributes to aging and to the development of a variety of degenerative diseases...

Where do free radicals come from?

Radiation, bacteria and viruses, stress, cigarette smoke, medication, mold, excessive physical activity, alcohol, home used chemicals, UV rays, toxins, sleep deprivation, processed foods, air pollution

We are not born equal!

Natural sources: fruit and vegetables

●biodegradable ● react slowly in the body● are not stable under high temperatures ● have low lignans content

Artificial sources: vitamins

●synthetic ● react slowly in the body  ● are not stable under high temperatures ●some might be toxic

Trees are the richest source of lignans

  • Trees can live for centuries and even millennia.
  • Trees are resistant to oxidative stress
  •  Trees can handle invasive threats from bacteria and insects
  • Trees have highly efficient protection and preservation mechanisms, which have elaborated through long evolution.

  • There are different types of lignans: lignans found in fruits, vegetables, oil seeds and nuts are different from those produced from tress
  • The lignans produced from Norwegian spruce are the most powerful lignans in the world.
  • The Norwegian spruce is a disease-free tree, which possesses self-healing capabilities. The Norwegian spruce lignan is called 7-hydroxymatairesinol (7-HMR)

Benefits of a lignan-rich diet

Heart Health Protection Studies show that people who consume a lot of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables have reduced the risk of heart disease by up to 65%. There are many studies that prove that antioxidants are important for cardiovascular health.
Protection against dementia (dementia) There is evidence that free radicals damage the brain cells of people who have been diagnosed with severe cognitive states. Free radicals appear to cause clusters of brain proteins typical of Alzheimer's disease.
Prostate Health Protection. As the man matures, benign prostatic tumors may appear, which can lead to lower urinary tract problems. Lignans in the diet can relieve the symptoms of benign prostatic problems, which can cause bladder discomfort and emptying problems.
Improving Hair Health When testosterone in men is converted to its more potent form, it can cause hair follicles to shrink and significant hair loss. Lignans can slow the progress of the process by slowing down the conversion rate, thereby improving hair health and at the same time significantly reducing hair loss.
Controlling Diabetic Complications There is ample evidence that antioxidants can relieve a number of diabetes symptoms and relieve the pain and discomfort of diabetic neuropathy. * Not recommended for pregnant and / or lactating women and children
Breast Cancer Risk Reduction 58 Years With 7 recent French research conducted, 049 participating women concluded that ... "High consumption of plant lignans was associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer in a non-soy-rich Western diet."
Protecting DNA from free radicals can damage DNA in healthy cells and thus change their operating instructions and divide them uncontrollably and thus create cancerous tumors. Laboratory research shows that phytochemicals (lignans) can stifle tumor development in many ways, including neutralization free radicals.
